How It Works

What is NationPhone?
With NationPhone you can make calls with your ordinary telephone device using your existing Internet connection. Your telephone and your PC are independently connected to a box device: the VoiceFinder. Making calls with NationPhone is just as simple as when using an ordinary telephone: just take the handset from the case and dial the number. And when someone calls you your telephone rings. It works this way:

The Voice over IP platform from your NationPhone converts the call from Internet telephony into ordinary telephony. That applies to both in-coming and out-going calls.

Can I also make free calls?
Yes, you can call other NationPhone users for FREE! And in the future it will remain free.

Can I also call people who do not use NationPhone?
Yes, you can call every fixed and mobile telephone device at home or abroad.

Do I need an Internet connection to call?
Yes, to call using NationPhone you need a cable, ADSL or LAN Internet connection. NationPhone is compatible with all broadband Internet providers in the Netherlands.

Can I use the Internet and call at the same time?
Yes, while calling using NationPhone it is also possible to use the Internet.

What do you need?
A VoiceFinder including a NationPhone subscription.
A cable, ADSL or LAN Internet connection.
An analog telephone device.

Do I need my PC during the calls?
No, the VoiceFinder makes it possible to call through the Internet without a PC. The VoiceFinder is directly connected to your modem. Then you connect your telephone and your PC separately to the VoiceFinder. This means that the telephone and the PC will function independently of each other.

What do you get?
A NationPhone subscription
A VoiceFinder
A new telephone number (you may keep your existing number)
Free calls to other NationPhone subscribers
Call anywhere in the Netherlands paying local fees
Super advantageous international calls
Online, realtime billing information
Free Voicemail-to-e-mail service
Call Diversion/Forwarding

I am an Apple Macintosh or Linux user, can I also use NationPhone?
Yes, the VoiceFinder ensures that the telephone and the computer work independently of each other. This means that the operational system of your computer has no influence on your telephone line. Therefore you may use NationPhone with all operational systems (Windows, Linus, Apple Macintosh) installed on your computer.

Does the VoiceFinder work with all types of modems?

No, the following modems are not supported by the VoiceFinder:

All types of USB modems
All types of serial modems
Copperjet modem 81X series, provided by Cistron

If you use one of the modems above it is not possible to use the NationPhone in connection with the VoiceFinder, unfortunately.

Using Expat Mobile with a Blackberry, Cingular 8125 & other phones?
Automating your blackberry to work seamlessly with NationPhone works the same as adding an extension number. You can instruct the BlackBerry to dial the aces number and then the desired out of state or international number. When entering the access number into the new address or enter address screen, type in the access number, press the track wheel, choose, add Pause from the menu that appears, and then add the number to be dialed, followed by the "#" sign. With most other PDA's and cell phone you add a pause by placing the letter "p" or " , " ( comma) between the numbers to be dialed (If you have sharp eyes, note the Add Wait menu option, which is a variation on the easy way to dial phone extensions feature. Adding a pause tells your BlackBerry to dial the extension number for you - after a two-second delay - whenever you want it to. Adding a wait lets your BlackBerry know that it's time to call up the Extension Dialog screen, which prompts you to enter the extension number.) When you finish entering the contact information you want, press the track wheel, scroll, and click Save.

For example: Let's say you have an international contact, John Doe, in Brazil and his phone number is 011.55.21.12345678 and that your local NationPhone access number is 914.8764321. Simply choose to add an extra number to that contact, copy and paste the access number, insert a pause and then the international number follow by a #. Your contact would look something like this:

John Doe

Mobile: 011.55.21.12345678
Work 2*: 914.8764321p011.55.21.12345678#

* the "p" above works for many phone types and is used here instead of the PAUZE button on the blackberry.

Voice Finder

I can use the Internet but can not make calls with the VoiceFinder?
Start the VoiceFinder again (pull out the feeding cable and plug it in again 5 seconds later). After 2 minutes the VoiceFinder will start again. Try once more to make a call.

If your problem is not yet solved after starting again the VoiceFinder, click then on the left in the menu on 'Contact' to contact the NationPhone Helpdesk.

How many telephone devices can I connect to the VoiceFinder?
The maximum connecting factor for analog equipment is 2. This means that when the total connecting factor is higher than 2 (number of connected devices added), some of the devices will not ring when a call comes in. However, it is possible to connect an analog telephone central to the VoiceFinder, and then you will be able to connect several telephone devices to the central. In all cases, you will dispose of one telephone line only.

Does the VoiceFinder also support call identification?
The VoiceFinder supports call identification of in-coming calls on nearly all telephone devices and call identification devices. If the call identification feature on your telephone device does not work, please report this to our helpdesk (click on the left in the menu on 'Contact'), and indicate which type of device you are using.

Does the VoiceFinder work with all types of modems?
No, the following modems are not supported by the VoiceFinder:

All types of USB modems
All types of serial modems
Copperjet modem 81X series, provided by Cistron

If you use one of the modems above it is not possible to use the NationPhone in connection with the VoiceFinder, unfortunately.

Does the VoiceFinder work with a Casema / Wanadoo modem using the L2TP protocol?
If your cable modem was provided by Casema between September 2003 and March 2004, then it uses the L2TP protocol. Contact Casema / Wanadoo to let the protocol of your modem be transferred (for free) to DHCP. Once this adaptation is made, you can install the VoiceFinder without problems.

I have a router (with NAT), can I continue to use it?
Yes, if the VoiceFinder is directly connected to your cable or ADSL modem (the VoiceFinder is therefore placed between the modem and the router). Then you can build your network behind the VoiceFinder in any way you want. The VoiceFinder works in principle with nearly all types of routers. There are however some routers that are not supported by the VoiceFinder. You can find a list of these routers on the next question.

What type of routers (still) do not work in combination with the VoiceFinder?
At this moment the VoiceFinder works in combination with all known router models. If you have problems using the VoiceFinder in combination with your router, please contact our helpdesk. Indicate then the type of router you are using and the firmware version installed on it.

I use a Draytek 2200 router, does it work with the VoiceFinder?
For the installation of the VoiceFinder behind a Draytek 2200 router we have a special user guide. Click here to download this user guide.

Is it possible to install the VoiceFinder behind a router (NAT)?
Yes, if you are using a router (NAT) you can connect the VoiceFinder without problems to one of the LAN ports of your router.

I have a multi-PC modem (a modem with integrated NAT), does the VoiceFinder work well in this case?
Yes, if you are using a multi-PC modem (a modem with integrated NAT), you can connect the VoiceFinder without problems to one of the LAN ports of your multi-PC modem.

How does my PC / router receive the IP-address of the VoiceFinder?
Within the VoiceFinder there is a DHCP server. The server shares with your PC or router the IP-address based on DHCP.

How does the installation of the VoiceFinder work?
For an explanation about the installation of the VoiceFinder, click here to download the VoiceFinder's user guide.

Do I still have to start the call-up connection from my PC after the VoiceFinder is installed?
As from the moment that the VoiceFinder is installed it will take care of this 'call-up connection'. Therefore you don't need to start the 'call-up connection' from your computer anymore: at the moment that your computer starts, the Internet connection will be already available.

Do I have to forward ports on my router when I connect the VoiceFinder?
In most cases it is not necessary to set up port-forwardings on your router or multi-PC modem when you connect the VoiceFinder. If you notice that after connecting it you can not receive calls or if there are problems with receiving sound, then we advice you to set port 2 forward on your router / multi-PC modem.

Before you set the port forwarding on your router you should first set up your VoiceFinder to type 4 (fixed IP). When a fixed IP-address is assigned to the VoiceFinder, the port forwarding to this address will always work. If the VoiceFinder is set up to type 1 (DHCP), you will run the risk of getting another IP-address assigned to the VoiceFinder during a restart (of the VoiceFinder itself or of the router), which will make the port forwarding not to work on the proper way anymore. You can set up the VoiceFinder to type 4 (DHCP) as follows:

Connect only one loose PC to the VoiceFinder
Surf to 10.1.1.1
Select Setup
Select type 4 (Fixed IP)
Fill in the following data:
IP address: an IP-address within the range of your network (mostly 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x)
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: the intern IP-address of your (mostly 192.168.x.x. or 10.x.x.x)
Primary DNS server: the intern IP-address of your router (mostly 192.168.x.x. or 10.x.x.x)
Click on Enter
Click again on Enter to save the configuration and start the VoiceFinder again.
After the setup, connect theVoiceFinder to one of the LAN ports of your router and start the VoiceFinder again.
Check if you can use the Internet with the PC connected to the VoiceFinder.

Next, set up on your router or multi-PC modem the following port forwarding to the IP-address of your VoiceFinder:

UDP 38383
TCP 38388

Save the configuration of the router and start it again if necessary.

After setting up these adjustments you should be able to make and receive calls without problems. If this is not the case please contact our helpdesk using the contact form.
